Woe to Our Culture - Comments (0) Tyler Steele - 8/11/2011
It may sound a little dooms-dayish, but what else can I say? I’m disgusted with our culture. Just recently I saw an ad on the internet for a TV show. The ad was implying naked, or at least partially naked, men. Practically every time I get on the internet I am bombarded with hideous images of moral depravity. Almost everywhere one looks there is a complete lack of morals. Extreme immodesty surrounds us in the ads we see, in the shows we watch, in the movies we buy, on the very streets we walk. We are encouraged day in and day out to be disloyal to our spouses, to gripe and complain about work, to use swear words, to be totally absorbed with ourselves and what we want. We are told to not allow anything to get in the way of what we want. You don’t want that baby? Abort him or her so you won’t be burdened with a child. You want something but don’t have the money? That’s okay, just use credit cards and don’t worry about ever paying for it, just make sure you pay the interest. You’re tired of your spouse? No problem, get a divorce. You don’t want to work? That’s alright, just keep playing your video game. The list goes on and on. We are all taught to act and think this way and then we get angry at our elected officials for having affairs, being obscene, looking out for their own interests, etc. What hypocrites are we that we would chastise these people for doing the very things our culture encourages. What a mess! Why is this? It is because we have left behind the Christian foundation that we once had. For the majority of America’s history, Judeo-Christian values were upheld and taught. Now they are not only absent, but they are frowned upon. The result is a culture that is totally devoid of morality. And yet we are surprised and shocked at all the corruption in our country. We shouldn’t be surprised when we have such a blatant disregard for the value system that made us great. What do we do? We return to those values. There are glimmers of hope, organizations that teach people about these values. There is such a thing as a good clean family movie still in this nation, though it’s rare. There are still businesses that are honest in their dealings. We must realize that these values are what made us great and that when we abandon them we can expect nothing less than the situation we are currently in…and worse. Restore those values of honesty, modesty, loyalty, uprightness, a hard work ethic, kindness, and more. It is the only way.
