In addition to weathering a springtime San Luis Valley snowstorm, the Wolverines created enough heat last Saturday to score a crucial Intermountain League sweep at Alamosa's expense.

Led by the arm of senior Trey Lange (W; 5.1 IP), Bayfield took Game 1 12-6, with usual catcher Kelton McCoy (0.2 IP) and Matthew Knickerbocker (1 IP) also seeing time on the mound.

"He had a good day," head coach Jon Qualls said of Lange. "One of the brightest spots of our pitching this year."

Sophomore Zane Phelps again sizzled, with four runs batted in, including a two-out, three-run homer off junior Dalton Carleo in the top of the second for a 7-0 advantage. McCoy went 2-3, as did centerfielder Brody McGhehey and first baseman Noah Loutherback. McCoy, McGhehey, Loutherback and leadoff man Taed Heydinger each scored twice.

Game 2, however, took a different tone as the Mean Moose looked to make amends.

"We were actually behind going into the fifth," recalled Qualls on the bus ride towards home, as BHS had some tough pitching.

Knickerbocker came back on the mound to earn the win in Game 2. The Wolverine bats came back to life, too, prevailing 16 to 6.

Lange finished with three RBI on 3-5 batting, Phelps again was 3-4, and Knickerbocker finished the same as the action went the distance.

"Those are two huge games for us, to go to Alamosa and win. They're a tough team," said Qualls. His boys are now 7-3 overall, 2-0 IML, AND now #10 in this week's CHSAANow.com Class 3A rankings.

Up next, Bayfield goes to Aztec, N.M., tomorrow to face the Tigers (5-11, 0-0 Dist. 1-4A) at 11 a.m.
