Bobcats nipped at Nucla in eight

Ignacio's Anthony Manzanares beats the throw to 3A Centauri third baseman Devon Chacon during last Thursday's non-league road game (a 15-7 win) at Falcon Field.

The lengthier a baseball game, the more pressure is put on every ball put into play.

And an unfortunate unearned run allowed Nucla to prolong Tuesday's San Juan Basin League game, and ultimately win by a single run.

Ignacio head coach Lupe Huerta's words indicated something of a smile after the Bobcats' second straight extra-inning defeat, 5 runs to 4.

"It was a GOOD game," he stated via cell phone. He was referencing the team's frustrations from an 11-10 home loss to rivals Dolores at SunUte Field four days earlier, when IHS squandered a six-run lead in the seventh inning. "The first three innings we had them, like, three-up-three-down. And we stayed up 'til the fourth."

When the Mustangs finally got to IHS junior starter Iaasic Peña (L, CG; 7 H, 4 BB, 4 K) after being baffled multiple times prior, they began connecting.

Junior Adison Jones' pinch-hit RBI-single put the 'Cats (5-4, 1-2) up 4-3 in the top of the eighth, and sophomore Rain Rosa and senior Clayton Jefferson also were strong at the bottom of the order, Huerta said before his call cut out.

Ignacio's road work continued yesterday at Pagosa Springs (6-5, 2-2 3A Intermountain). SJBL action resumes tomorrow when IHS plays two in Dove Creek, and then a pair in Dolores on the 22nd.
