AmeriGas hosting customer appreciation day tomorrow

AmeriGas will have its annual customer appreciation day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow at its location at 2282 Bayfield Parkway.

The event includes food and games. Customers can exchange their barbecue-sized propane tanks for $9, with all proceeds benefitting the BHS band.

Bayfield-Ignacio YAFL holding "Grip It & Rip It" fundraiser

Players in the Bayfield-Ignacio Young American Football League are raising funds in their annual "Rip It & Grip It" challenge. Players are collecting pledges for every yard they punt, pass and kick the ball. The funds are used to help keep YAFL fees low, provide players' awards, scholarships, and for new equipment and supplies. Flat pledges are also accepted.

Pledges have to be returned to the league by Oct. 4. Pledges can be made through any YAFL player in the second through sixth grades, or at the Pine River Times office at 110 E. Mill St. in Bayfield.

Cattlemen hosting candidate forum Monday

The La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen Association will host a candidate forum at 7 p.m. Monday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Candidates in the state representative race, Rep. Mike McLachlan and challenger J. Paul Brown, are slated to attend, as are the candidates for county commissioner, sheriff, coroner, and treasurer, as well as the unopposed incumbents for the county offices of assessor, clerk and surveyor. All are welcome to attend.

Upper Pine hosting barbecue, open house Saturday

The Upper Pine River Fire Protection District is hosting a barbecue and open house from noon to 2 p.m. tomorrow at the administration building on Sower Drive. The event is in honor of the district's 40th anniversary. For more information, call 884-9508.

Library highlights two Colorado women with "Herstory" presentation

Two strong Colorado women are featured this month in a special "Herstory" event in Bayfield. "Herstory: Meet Betty Pellet and Ann Bassett" will be presented at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the library. 

Terri Helm and Midge Kirk will transform themselves into Pellet and Bassett, giving participants a chance to hear their stories. In the 1940s through the 1960s, Pellet served in the state's House of Representatives, eventually becoming the state's first female minority leader. Meanwhile, Bassett is rumored to have been Etta Place, the girlfriend of the Sundance Kid.

Run, fun day tomorrow to increase awareness of pediatric brain condition

The Pediatric Hydrocephalus Foundation will host a walk, 5K run and fun day tomorrow at the plaza at Three Springs. The event starts at 10 a.m. and features food and live music by singer and author Melanie Milburn. Registration for the run starts at 9 a.m. There is no cost for any of the events, but donations are appreciated.

The foundation raises money and awareness for children with this brain condition. More information is available at www.HydrocephalusKids.org.

J. Paul Brown hosting meet and greet in Durango

J. Paul Brown, candidate for Colorado House District 59, will have a meeting with interested voters from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the La Plata County Fairgrounds upstairs in the Lightner Room. Sen. Ellen Roberts is hosting the event and has invited other Republican candidates to attend. A Republican breakfast will be held at 7:15 a.m. Sept. 25 at Christina's in Durango. The public is welcome to attend either event and bring questions.

Church hosting community dinner in Arboles

Arbloes Baptist Church is hosting a community appreciation dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the TARA pavilion on Milton Lane in Arboles. Smokin' Moes Barbecue will provide the food. All are welcome.

PRCLC offering stipend to GED students

For a limited time, students between the ages of 17 and 21 who enroll in the GED program at the Pine River Community Learning Center and are actively attending classes through Nov. 1 will received $200 cash to use as desired. Students will also receive an additional $100 for each GED section passed by Dec. 31.

PRCLC offers classes at its Bayfield location at 54 Mill St. or Ignacio at 535 Candelaria Drive.

Enrollment and orientation is available Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. in Ignacio or Wednesday mornings at 9 a.m. in Bayfield. Expect enrollment to take two and a half hours to complete. To schedule an enrollment time, call 563-0681.
