Ignacio library celebrates Englehart show

TIMES STAFF REPORT

Three scenic abstract paintings by the late Stanton Englehart are now showing at the Ignacio Community Library. Englehart taught for many years in the Fort Lewis College Art Department and was known for his Southwest landscapes painted in a very abstract style. The paintings are on loan from the Englehart Family Trust.

"Summer Sky" is a three-panel oil on canvas work that now dominates the southern wall of the library with its vibrant red color and almost eerie elements of fire and skeletons in the undercurrents of the pieces.

Earlier this week, one of the library's activities for tweens showed a video about the life and art of the painter, then the kids created their own landscapes from tissue paper.

Bringing art to library patrons is one of the missions of the library, explained Leslee Shell, the library's director. The library also hosts a quarterly art show, with current work on display through Sept. 30. The art shows are coordinated by Renee Morgan of the library's staff.

Anne Kernan, president of the library's board, was instrumental in securing the Englehart family's loan to the library.

A reception will be held Thursday, Sept. 25, at 5:30 p.m. Flute music will be provided by Michael Kunz, and light refreshments will be served.
