Hunters asked to keep eyes open

Mother of dead 13-year-old still seeking clues

Elaine Hatfield, the mother of Dylan Redwine, is asking hunters to keep their eyes open this fall for human remains or his still-missing cell phone, backpack and ballcap with a Duke Blue Devils logo on it.

Redwine flew to Durango almost two years ago to visit his father, Mark Redwine, for a court-ordered visit for Thanksgiving. He disappeared the next day. Law enforcement confirmed that Dylan was at his father's house the evening of Nov. 18, but after he had texted friends that evening, nobody heard from him again. Mark Redwine said he left his house at Vallecito on the morning of Nov. 19, 2012, to go to Durango, and when he returned, his son was gone.

A massive volunteer search, followed by a law enforcement manhunt, never found any clues in his disappearance. In June of 2013, a few small bones were found on Middle Mountain near Vallecito. DNA testing confirmed they belonged to Dylan.

The flyer asks hunters to keep an eye out for a black Hurley backpack, an older-style cell phone with a keyboard that slides out, and a black-and-white baseball cap with blue lettering on it.

The items would appear to be worn and weathered by now, the flyer states. If anything is found, it should not be disturbed, but the location should be marked and La Plata County dispatch should be contacted at 385-2900.

Hatfield and Redwine had an acrimonious divorce, and she has accused her ex-husband of killing their son.

Big game archery seasons end Sunday, and rifle seasons start Oct. 11. With that, scores of hunters arrive in the Vallecito area, looking primarily for elk.
