Knowing there was still plenty of time to mount a comeback, Bayfield's Shea Marx found the perfect spot to stand and save the day-and goalie Ben Young's vacated net - Tuesday against the Pagosa Pirates.

Having seen his teammate's bid for an empty-netter foiled by the quick-thinking Marx, Pagosa Springs' James Berndt decided that too much time had passed in the Pirates' progress towards a crucial insurance marker. Not even 60 seconds more would expire; taking it upon himself, the speedy junior managed a 58th-minute run on Young and at last put the visitors up 2-0.

Goal #3 was of the same quick-turnaround, momentum-stealing sort. Wolverine junior Viktor Sandvik attempted to thread a pass to a streaking Samuel Kundrik on his left, to lead his fellow junior into a 1-v-1 with PSHS goalie Briar Erskine in the 61st. But the chance never came.

With freshman Grant Pierce continuing to fire from long range, the Wolverines were never out of striking distance, though a much closer opportunity in the 71st proved most promising. That is, until a Pagosa player dove into a header, disrupting a Pierce pass to a wide-open Sandvik at Pagosa's back post. The Pirates won the maatch 4-0.

Young, Bayfield's goalie, totaled 16 stops of varying degree and manner, as Pagosa Springs (7-2, 5-2 SWL) took 31 shots, as opposed to BHS' dozen.
