Wolverines at home for regionals

3A Region III starts at 9 a.m. Saturday
Seen during her team's regular-season finale at Alamosa, Bayfield head coach Terene Foutz, in her second year leading the Lady Wolverines, has her team hyped for this weekend's 3A-Region III tournament to be held inside BHS Gymnasium.  BHS took third place in the 'Gold' bracket of last weekend's Palmer Ridge Invitational out in Monument against 4A- and 5A-level opposition, going 3-1 and improving to 20-3 overall in 2014.

Finishing the regular season an unscheduled 2-for-2 against the 4A/5A Southwestern League's eventual-and ultimately undefeated-champions, Bayfield made excellent amends for their lone Palmer Ridge Invitational loss last Saturday at the expense of talented Montrose.

"The team played strong, very hard, and we are better for having participated," said head coach Terene Foutz via e-mail. "It was a great weekend." BHS swept pool-play matches at PRHS against 4A Longmont Silver Creek (25-16, 25-19) and 5A Thornton Horizon (25-16, 25-20)-in the finale of the event featuring crews from the Intermountain, Patriot and Western Slope Leagues.

Coming off a 23-25, 23-25, 25-20, 22-25 loss to 4A Denver J.K. Mullen's Mustangs at the gathering out east in Monument, BHS swept the Indians by scores of 25-23, 25-19, 25-21 to take third place, boost their overall record to 20-3 (Montrose dipped to 18-5) and lock up hosting duties for one of this week's Class 3A regional tournaments. BHS had lost a game to the Indians in a 2-1 pool-play win at the Sept. 6 Lewis-Palmer Invite in the same town.

And CHSAA would soon commend the Wolverines for their work, and 2014 as a whole.

On Monday, the Wolverines took the #3 seed in the 36-team field, and they will host Region III action in BHS Gymnasium. Starting tomorrow at 9 a.m., Bayfield will take the court first against #34 Estes Park (3-20). Estes Park will then face #22 Parachute Grand Valley.

Coming in 13-10 overall, Parachute Grand Valley will then test BHS.

In Region X, 10-seed Pagosa Springs (17-6 overall) will also represent the IML as a host, and will welcome to town #15 Denver Bishop Machebeuf (16-7) and #27 Salida (16-7).

Alamosa (13-8) earned a regional berth, but will have to travel to Region VI hosted by 6-seed Manitou Springs (19-4). AHS received the #19, and will be joined by #31 Bennett (13-10).

Centauri (7-12) received the #32 seed, and will head to Region V. Awaiting them will be hosting 5-seed Colorado Springs Christian (21-2) and #20 Greeley Frontier Academy (9-13).
