BHS claws to 4th at Dawg Fight

Beebe wins for Wolverines

Some were certainly confused when Garrett Beebe was placed on an end mat, after the Dove Creek announcer had said that all first-place matches would be held in the middle of Dove Creek's gym. No matter; with a pin of 2A Norwood's Hunter Wilson 72 seconds into the second period, Bayfield's freshman made sure he'd be in the proper place when it was time for medals to be conferred. He went 5-for-5 at 106 pounds,

Also helping contribute to the Wolverines' fourth-place total of 86 team points, senior Blane Barnes was BHS' only other grappler last Saturday with a shot at an individual title in the 195-pound finale. But he fell 5-2 after six tense minutes against 2A Walsenburg's Jason Murphy and finished the event with a 2-1 record.

BHS heavyweight Sam Westbrook also ended up finishing second after posting a 3-1 mark-the loss to eventual champ Damian Shorthair of 5A Farmington, N.M.-but wasn't on the mat for the round-robin's finale.

Wolverine 132-pounder Taylor Winch enjoyed a 4-1 tournament. At 120, Cody Speece scored Bayfield a fourth with his 3-1 performance, ending with a victory over Dove Creek's Donavan Trudeau. A level lower at 113, Jake Sandrey finished the long day in Dolores County 2 up, 1 down, but did not qualify for the final phase of the weight's bracket.

152-pounder Cash Snooks halved his four matches, but did not place in the top four. Austin Baughman at 138 and Lane Grimwood at 145 went winless in their four tries.

Up next for the Wolverines will be this weekend's Moon Valley Invitational in Phoenix. From information provided by MVHS head coach Bryan Smith, Bayfield looks to be the only Colorado crew in the mix.
