Bayfield wrestles to 2nd in Salida

Robbins wins for IHS at 113
Bayfield's Cody Speece glances intently while trying to lift Monte Vista's Santiago Martinez during last Thursday's IML dual inside MVHS Gymnasium.

In sports there's "beast mode," and there's "Speece mode."

Bayfield wrestling hopes it sees more of the latter as the decisive February portion of its schedule approaches. Sophomore 120-pounder Cody Speece made his first-ever championship-round appearance at last Saturday's Rob Mickel Memorial Invitational in Salida, helping BHS take second at the Spartans' signature event.

Though he ultimately came in second, going 2-1 at the tournament, Speece made 2A Peyton's Taylor Claman work for the weight's title and lost by a narrow 2-0 score after six minutes of work.

Getting first-place points from senior Colter McMenimen at 145 pounds and sophomore heavyweight Sam Westbrook, the Wolverines racked up 131 points at the 15-team gathering and trailed only 3A Cedaredge's 160.

Westbrook went a clean 4-0 through his division, including victories over 2A Ignacio senior Josh Gallegos [7 to 5] and a pin of 2A San Luis Centennial junior Ethan Adams in 22 seconds.

After a first-round bye, McMenimen went a dominant 3-0, capped by a 16-0 technical fall of 3A Colorado Springs Christian junior Niles Primrose, whistled officially 1:35 into the second period.

BHS freshman Garrett Beebe took home second place at 106 pounds, his going 2-1.

113-pounder Jake Sandrey also went 2-1, but settled for third place-beating SHS' Dmitri Huschka 9-zip-after losing in the semifinals to IHS standout sophomore Stocker Robbins, who went on to take first. Taylor Winch went 2-1 (with two byes), but ended up fifth at 132 pounds after a 51-second pin of 2A Center's Nabor Quintana.

Recently cleared after having fulfilled state transfer requirements, sophomore 138-pounder Jake Jensen went 1-2, beating LAHS' Charles Willis 5-2, but did not place. Jensen left 4A Falcon and debuted for Bayfield during their 40-35 loss at Monte Vista last Thursday in 3A/2A Intermountain League dual action.

Austin Baughman competed unattached at 145 after being quickly inserted at 160 versus MVHS (where he received a dual-beginning forfeit). Senior 160-pounder Marquis Mashak went 0-5 at 160, including losses to Ignacio's Mike Perez and Timmy Plehinger and to eventual topper Cordell Curtis of Center.

Junior Cash Snooks went a strong 4-1. His only loss came to CSCS standout senior Connor Craddock in the winners' quarterfinals. He ended up placing fifth at 152 pounds after a 9-3 defeat of Peyton's Jimmy Mathews.

Bayfield will next see action at this weekend's two-day Sand Devil Classic in Page, Ariz., and then return to IML combat on Jan. 29 at Pagosa Springs.
