Burglary suspect arrested

Bruce Kevin Labarthe

On Jan. 24, La Plata County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man in connection with two burglaries that took place days earlier west of Ignacio.

As of Monday, 48-year-old La Plata County resident Bruce Kevin Labarthe was being held at the La Plata County Detention Center on $25,000 bond on a charge of second degree burglary, a Class 3 felony. He was also being held on two warrants related to previous cases of theft and possession of Schedule I drugs.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Dan Bender reported that on Saturday, Jan. 17, deputies investigated a burglary that took place on Cow Canyon Road, north of County Road 310. Several items were stolen including a mountain bike and camping gear.

On Tuesday, Jan. 20, a second burglary was reported in the same area. A television, a computer, and other items were taken during that break-in.

As a result of their investigation, sheriff's deputies served a search warrant at a home on County Road 318. Stolen items from both burglaries were recovered and Labarthe was taken into custody in connection with the burglaries, and also for the two outstanding warrants.

Bender said several alert residents in the area were instrumental in helping the sheriff's office in this case.
