Local diner offering new healthy menu

Grilled chicken, salmon, sirloin - and hummus! - are among new options

The Patio is home to the Patio burger, free pie night, (tonight!) and the ever-popular fries and Tater Tots.

And smoked salmon, hummus and egg whites.

What?

Don't panic, said owner Emily Meisner. While the Thompson special is still on the breakfast menu (it's a half order of French toast with bacon, eggs and hash browns), it has been joined by three new options, including two that are gluten free.

Three lunches and three dinners, featuring lean grilled chicken and salmon, are also on a new menu featuring healthy choices.

Meisner said while down-home cooking is still popular, there are more of her patrons at the Ignacio landmark who need some healthier options, and she wants to oblige.

A lot of it is portion control.

While the restaurant is known for huge platters of food, the new menu items are smaller, but they still fill folks up.

"My mom taught me to clean my plate," Meisner said. "Now I can do that," without that huge busted-gut feeling, she added. There are calorie, protein and carbohydrate counts with each item.

The following are options at each meal, and the restaurant can substitute eggs for egg whites or trade fruit for potatoes.

Breakfast

Breakfast tacos with egg whites and taco meat; four-ounce sirloin steak and eggs with potatoes; and chicken apple sausage links and eggs with potatoes.

Lunch

Mediterranean salmon sampler with hummus, capers, cream cheese, olives and a pita, with salad or fruit; garlic rosemary chicken breast, roasted potatoes; or a tuna salad wheat pita.

Dinner

There are three more options for dinner, a six-ounce sirloin with Asaian sauce and stir-fry steamed vegetables; baked salmon with potato or sweet potato and steamed vegetables, or herb-roasted chicken, also with the side dishes.

Sauces can be swapped out for different flavors, as well.

So the new menu might not be what someone wants every day, but it does provide some options, Meisner said.

And don't forget, free pie night is tonight, with one free piece of cake or pie with every entree.
