Bobcats wrestle strong at the Screaming Eagle

Ignacio junior Tyler Beebe again fought the good fight at last Saturday's prestigious Screaming Eagle Invitational in Paonia.

Beebe had four good matches, in fact, against just one loss in taking third place at 132 pounds. That helped the Bobcats rack up a fifth-place 135 points at the 17-team tournament. Victorious over IHS at the previous night's PHS Mixed Duals, the hosting Paonia Eagles were the tournament champion with 254.

Steady at #8 in the state poll, Coach Cody Haga's crew boasted two champions at Paonia, sophomore 113-pounder Stocker Robbins and senior heavyweight Josh Gallegos.

Continuing his outstanding winter, Robbins went 4-0 at the event-winning his first two matches by pin, each in less than a minute, before pinning Paonia's Clay Campbell at the 4:18-elapsed mark in the semifinals and edging Meeker's Sheridan Harvey 3-2 in the finale.

Gallegos made a 3-0 run through the seven-man bracket and handled 3A Cedaredge's Mario Madaleno in the title tussle, 8 to 1.

Senior Alex Lopez went 1-1 in an undermanned 220-pound bracket, but took third for Ignacio via a pin 20 seconds into the second period of Cedaredge's Anthony Antuna.

Sophomore Ethan Appenzeller and seniors Iaasic Pena and Mike Perez each placed fourth at the Screaming Eagle, with the first going 4-2 at 138 pounds, the second 2-2 at 152 and the third likewise at 160.

Wrestling unattached at 160, sophomore Timmy Plehinger did not place after going 1-2. Sophomore Dalton Mickey also did not place for IHS at the event, going 0-2 at 145 pounds in place of injured classmate Lorenzo Pena, but senior brother Blaine, 1-3 at 182, placed sixth after a 5-3 overtime loss to 2A Center senior George Weatherford.

On Thursday, Jan. 22, Ignacio had 4A Durango dead to rights until forfeits at 120 and 126 pounds allowed the Demons to save a 42-31 win in their house.

Up next the 'Cats will host 3A Bayfield and 2A Rangely in non-league triangular action starting at 6 p.m. tonight inside SunUte Community Center-also the site of Ignacio's Butch Melton Memorial Invitational tomorrow.
