Times staff wins 2 writing awards

The Pine River Times received two writing awards from the Better Writing Contest for 2013-2014 sponsored by the Colorado Press Association. The awards were presented Saturday, Feb. 21 at the annual press association convention in Denver.

Tim Ogden, a columnist for the Times, received third place in the category of serious column writing for two of his columns, "Government controlled ammunition" and "I'm tired of being tolerant of the intolerant."

In their comments, the judges wrote: "Interesting topics and viewpoints. Well-stated and some very good points raised through the opinion of the writer."

Melanie Brubaker Mazur, the Times managing editor, received third place in the category of best news story.

Her article, "One year later, a mother remembers," was an interview with Elaine Hatfield, the mother of Dylan Redwine, after he disappeared while visiting his father in Vallecito. Seven months later, his partial body remains were found on Middle Mountain in Vallecito.

"Solid piece of journalism!" the judges wrote. "Good work, solid writing, and good reporting."

The Times received the awards as part of the press association's contest for newspapers in the state with a circulation of 1,000 to 2,000 weekly readers. The awards were judged by members of the Missouri Press Association.
