Convicted sex offender moves to Bayfield

William Ed Vollert

A Durango man who had sexual relations when he was 20 with a 14-year-old and was convicted of sexual assault has moved to the Bayfield area, according to the La Plata County Sheriff's Office.

William Ed Vollert, 29, has moved to 7453 CR 510, south of Bayfield.

Sex offense convictions related to Vollert were from cases in 2008 and 2009 and involved adolescents.

In an interview with the Durango Herald in 2013, Vollert said he had consensual relations with a 14-year-old girl when he was 20, and her dad was OK with it. She was almost 15.

Her mother had a different idea, however, and called authorities.

In 2013, Vollert was living with a family in Durango after he had finished his prison term, and neighbors were worried because there were children in the area and it was near an elementary school.

Vollert served his term and is no longer on parole. As a convicted sex offender, however, he has to tell authorities when he moves or if he changes his appearance.

Vollert is described as a white male; 5'5"; 150 pounds; blond hair, blue eyes. He has extensive tattoos on his chest, arms, back, and a tear drop on his right face cheek.

The sheriff's office reminds residents that attempting to harass, threaten or intimidate a sexual offender or his significant other "will not be tolerated and could result in charges against those who attempt to do so."

This information is released simply for public awareness. Anyone with questions or information about Vollert can contact his supervising CDOC officer with the Colorado Department of Corrections, Ryan Jenkins, at (800) 426-9143 or Corporal Gary Mason with La Plata Sheriff's Office at 382-7069.

There are currently 18,630 registered sex offenders in Colorado, with 179 in La Plata County, according to the sheriff's office. Dozens of them live in the Bayfield and Ignacio area.
