Wolverine boys 2nd at home quad

4x100 relay team breaks school record

Definitely men on the move about Bayfield High School's athletic complex last Saturday, seniors Anthony Chamblee and Colter McMenimen certainly made the most out of their respective dual-sport moments.

Both had helped Wolverine Baseball properly open the squad's long-awaited new field earlier in the day, with each scoring one run in a defeat of 5A Aztec. Both then successfully made swift swaps of uniforms to aid BHS track & field in registering a second-place 136.5 points at the 2015 BHS Quadrangular inside adjacent Wolverine Country Stadium.

Chamblee joined classmate Conner Kennedy, junior Gabe Kaufmann and sophomore Brian Mashak in laying down a new school-record in the 4x100-meter relay. Their collective 44.27 sliced nearly half a tick off the 2003 44.71 of Nick Potter, Eric Nelson, Ryan Johnston and Nick Blackburn. McMenimen ended the entire meet running the 4x4's anchor leg, teaming with sophomores Gus Roberts and Ethan Tate and senior Brady Fields to bring the baton across the finish line in a winning 3:43.38.

The Wolverines' 4x200 (Kaufmann, Kennedy, senior Preston Hardy, Mashak) also was victorious in 1:34.15, leaving the 4x800 as the only relay in which Bayfield-which wasn't entered-didn't score first-place points.

Fields nearly pulled off a sweep of the hurdle-sprints, winning the 300-meter version in 44.05 seconds and taking second in the 110m version with a 17.37 pass. Kennedy was four inches better than his nearest competitor in the high jump, winning with a 5'11" best, and also owned the long jump with a 20-foot, 2.5-inch maximum.

Senior Aubry Brown swept the throws, winning the shot put with a best of 42'4" and the discus with a 143'0" effort that was over 31 feet farther than any other entrant.

Kaufmann was second in the 100m dash (11.93) and Mashak took second in the 200 (24.13; Kaufmann was third in 24.14). Freshman Sloan Mazur and sophomore Alex Knight were a close 2-3 in the 800, finishing in 2:15.49 and 2:15.53 respectively. Senior Michael Voss was second in the pole vault (12'6") and freshman Jaden Vitagliano second in the long jump (18'8").

Senior Blane Barnes followed Brown in the shot, taking second with a best of 41'1.5", and was third in the discus at 106'11".

Senior Zane Westbrook took third in the shot (39'11"), and Knight was third in the 1,600 meters (5:00.72).

McMenimen took fourth in the open 400 (54.23) and Fields did likewise in the high jump (5'5").

4A Durango won with 189.5 points, 2A Ignacio was third with 17 and 2A Dove Creek fourth with two.

Next up on the schedule for Bayfield will be the Abel Velasquez Invitational tomorrow (9 a.m.) in Ignacio. While this is the sixth annual meet hosted by the Bobcats, it will be the first back on their newly revamped track and field, and the first hosted by the school since 2002.
