Durango JV downs Bayfield, 3-0

Potentially gaining an assist, via usage of her own face, certainly wasn't part of Lydia Larson's plan against the Durango JV in Tuesday afternoon's road action.

But she came close to diving in to stop a shot, aware of the fact that it would deny the Demons a shutout in the non-league clash.

DHS was ahead 3-0 when Wolverine Maddy Duran, sensing the opposition may have started to break down, quickly launched two straightaway rockets in the 76th minute from 20 to 25 yards out. But DHS goalkeeper Lily Oles managed to save both and preserve the 3-0 victory on the pitch adjacent to Riverview Elementary School.

But not to be stopped, come heck, high water, or even Bayfield's Kailee Millard, DHS striker Angela Krueger provided the victors with their most crucial confidence boost just before halftime.

Able to fight off two BHS defenders at three-quarter speed while maintaining possession deep into the Wolverines' penalty area, the standout freshman somehow put a full right boot into the ball while falling to the grass-a result of one last desperation challenge. The kick zipped a low liner past the goalie to put the home side up 1-0 in the 39th minute.

And following an unfortunate own-goal by Bayfield's Taylor Morris, trying to kick away what appeared to be a Krueger cross in the 52nd, Krueger capitalized upon the momentum in the 55th with a bullet over Millard's fully outstretched hands and just under the crossbar.

Oles played the full match in net for Durango, and made five total saves unofficially. Savannah Kaufmann started between the pipes for Bayfield and made one stop before Jennifer Zelinski inserted Millard (six saves) in the 11th minute and moved Kaufmann into the attack.

Now 4-3 overall (4-2 3A/2A Southwestern), the Wolverines will host non-league Salida at 6 p.m. tonight. Results from Thursday's SWL road trip to Alamosa were unavailable at press time. The league-leading Mean Moose went in 8-0, 8-0 and ranked #7 in this week's CHSAANow.com Class 3A poll.
