Back home for the 'Abel'

IHS track returns homefor home meet

On April 11, Ignacio High School hosted the Abel Velasquez Invitational and did so on its own grounds for the first time in over a decade. Both the Bobcat boys' and girls' teams managed to register 45 team points, placing the boys fourth and the girls fifth.

IHS now has an improved track with the renovation last summer of its athletic stadium, so the Bobcats were back home for their meet after years of hosting it at Bayfield High School. The meet honors the school's longtime coach. Track and field competitors sported T-shirts that read "WWAVD?" on the back, or "What Would Abel Velasquez Do?"

Looking at the girls' scores, Bayfield won with 135 points, 4A Durango followed with 86 and Dolores took third with 78. Fellow 2A/1A San Juan Basin League members Mancos was fourth with 71, and 1A Lake City Community (31) and SJBL'ers Dove Creek (25) rounded out the table.

BHS also won the boys' title at the event with 175 points, and Durango was again second with 167. MHS ran third with 64, Lake City posted a fifth-place 42, Dolores was sixth with 33 and DC seventh with one.
