BHS soccer back at state!

Girls play Manitou Springs today in Broomfield

Ice bags chilled her leg, ankle, midsection as she exited Wolverine Country Stadium the evening before.

And after picking up where she left off versus Salida, Maddy Duran again sought out trainer Brandi Calderwood's sub-zero plastic wrapping. She even secured a sack herself to her jaw's left side-after Bayfield's Southwestern League visit from Center on April 30, which kicked off 17 hours after SHS' departure.

In addition to the pain there was one other commonality noticeable about the BHS junior: A smile, and a pretty big one at that.

Duran wasted little time in clinching the Wolverines a spot in the 2015 Class 3A State Tournament with a strike in the fifth against the Center Vikings, and marked again in the seventh to power a regular season-ending 6-1 triumph.

Also partially mummified by ice after the wins, senior Koya Maniss cleaned up a rebound of a Taylor Morris shot in the sixth for BHS' other first-half score, then finished a breakaway on CHS backup goalkeeper Melissa Jimenez in the 42nd for the girls' first second-half goal, giving her an impressive five scores in as many outings prior to the postseason.

Bayfield ended the regular season 10-2 in the 2A/3A Southwest League and 11-3 overall.

State play starts in the Denver Metro Area for today's first-round, 5 p.m. fixture at Broomfield Jefferson Academy against, yet again, Manitou Springs. Seeded 19th against the #14 Wolverines in a smaller 24-team bracket, MSHS (9-6 overall) went 5-0 in the Tri-Peaks League.

Bayfield met Manitou last May in the state tournament's initial Round-of-32 and went down by a 6-0 count on neutral ground in Colorado Springs. In 2011, MSHS prevailed 4-nil at home.

The BHS-MSHS winner will challenge 3-seed Jefferson Academy (13-2 overall) at 1 p.m. Saturday

ALSO 'DANCE'-ING: Southwestern champs Alamosa (12-2, 11-1) will begin the 3A Tournament as its 13-seed, and face #20 Aspen (10-4 overall) today up at Kent Denver, with #4 KD awaiting the winner tomorrow.
