A grand day for a grand country

Bayfield celebrates star-spangled 4th of July

It's a grand old Fourth of July in Bayfield, with plenty of small-town events for locals and visitors.

Independence Day activities started with the Lions Club pancake breakfast, the 5K sponsored by the Bayfield Family Center, the pet parade, then the big parade at 10 a.m. on Mill Street.

The biggest cheers at this year's parade were for the National Guard trucks and the service members' families, along with the veteran groups, Blue Star Moms, and the wildland firefighters from the San Juan National Forest units.

Saturday's events continue with horseshoes, softball and volleyball tournaments in Joe Stephenson and Eagle parks. Saturday night will have live music by Carbon Red from 7 to 9 p.m., followed by the fireworks at about 9 p.m., also in Joe Stephenson Park.

A full schedule of events in Bayfield is on the Times' web site.
