2nd-6th grade teams playing at home again Saturday
Payton Montogmery of the third grade Bayfield Wolverine team carries the ball on Saturday against Bloomfield. The team lost the outing, 0-12.

The Bayfield-Ignacio Young American Football League had three losses and two wins on Aug. 29, playing five games at home at Wolverine Country Stadium.

Bayfield sixth grade beat Montezuma Creek 45-0, reported an excited coach, Justin Ross.

The fifth grade lost to a tough Aztec team, 20-6, although the Wolverines were only behind 6-0 at the half. Lance Mazur threw the Wolverines' lone touchdown pass to receiver Silas Wilbourn in the second half of the game. The Wolverines made two other strong attempts to score, but the team couldn't make it across the goal line. Deegan Barnes had a long run for the team. Nicholas Twedt, Noah Chamblee and Mitchell Story played strong defense on Saturday.

On an up note for the Wolverines, the fourth grade boys defeated the Aztec Warriors 14-0.

"We had a solid team effort by both the offense and defense," said Head Coach Joey Serrano.

The third grade boys lost to Bloomield 12-0.

Second grade YAFL lost to the Farmington Panthers 8-0.

"It was a close game," reported parent Kristen Westbrook. "We had one touchdown called back, and we held the Panthers to nothing until the last eight seconds of the game when they scored. The second graders did awesome!" The second grade coaches said Tristyn Vavrina and Justin Westbrook played tough "and really stepped up big for the team," she added.

The Wolverines continue home play this Saturday, Sept. 5, with third grade playing at 9 a.m., fifth grade at 11 a.m., sixth grade at 1 p.m., and fourth grade at 3 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children under 12.

The final home games of the regular season are on Sept. 19.
