Cross country grinds away in Gunnison

Against a Salida-dominated, 11-school field at last Saturday's Cowboy Invitational in Gunnison, there was little the small Wolverine teams could do, other than simply try to stay somewhat close to the Spartans.

Ultimately that proved far easier said than done, and under excellent course conditions the Bayfield girls' varsity placed sixth out of seven scoring teams and the boys seventh out of eight.

Once again, Sloan Mazur paced BHS' boys with the team's top time of 19:39, while Bridget Goddard led the ladies with a 23:05 and achieved the overall highest placing at No. 21. (Mazur's result landed him 31st).

The 2-4 runners stayed comparatively tight, with Brandon Stuever (21:11), Bryan Gram (21:32) and Joey Sandrey (21:34) crossing in 44th, 51st and 53rd respectively for the boys and Lexa Fleming (24:33), Rachel Cooper (25:23) and Amber Johnson (25:39) 29th, 38th and 43rd for the girls.

66th place with a 23:56, Jackson Sibley completed Bayfield's boys' scoring quintet and the Wolverines finished with an adjusted total of 189 points. Sarah Ruybal, 58th place with her 29:05, was the girls' #5 and finalized an adjusted count of 155.

Brittany Birk (59th, 29:06), Mylee Sanders (64th, 32:32) and Jade Sanders (68th, 36:24) also competed for BHS in the girls' race, and Daniel Jenkins (67th, 24:17) did likewise in the boys'.

Salida's Taylor Stack breezed to victory in the boys' feature, clocking a 16:34 and beating second-place Jack Plantz of Telluride by 26 seconds. Salida's Taryn Ceglowski was the girls' winner in 20 minutes, 1 second, with teammate Phoebe Powell following next in 20:45.

Up next for Bayfield will be tomorrow's Pagosa Springs Invitational, starting at 9 a.m.
