Cowboy Gathering welcomes all to parade

Marine color guard, English shire horses joining motorless event

The Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering Parade will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. Festivities begin at 9:30 with live music up and down Main Street, and an Old West gunfight in front of the Strater Hotel will kick off the parade. For the first time, the parade is judging entries. Al Harper, owner of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad; Tim Walsworth, executive director of the Business Improvement District; and local personality Suzan Lane will be judges. The U.S. Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard will be featured, along with the magnificent Diamond Z English Shire Horses of Utah. These horses easily weigh over 2,000 pounds and are 18 1/2 hands tall. They are sponsored by Coca-Cola in honor of their 100th anniversary in the Four Corners area. Blizzard, a registered Texas longhorn and a popular attraction at the True West rodeo, will also make an appearance. Photo opportunities will be available immediately following the parade at the train station. This year's Grand Marshal is Anthony Zellitti, whose family has been ranching in La Plata County since 1902.
