Durango completes season sweep of BHS

Wolverines restart IML volleyball this week

A collective .115 hitting percentage.

A serving percentage well below 90 percent.

Both definitely not typical Bayfield volleyball numbers, and both definitely not conducive to a dominant showing this past Saturday at area non-league rivals Durango.

But junior Maddi Foutz's 10-kill, 19-dig double-double and strong attacking from sophomore front-liners Kylee McCoy and Ashley Mottin definitely had the Wolverines well in the hunt inside the DemonDome. Before succumbing to the 4A/5A Southwestern League team, the 3A Intermountain Leaguers made sure to again show their determination to go the distance in an 11-25, 25-16, 18-25, 26-24, 10-15 defeat.

McCoy finished with nine kills at a .250 clip, and Mottin seven at an excellent .429, but senior Brooke Kudelski was held to just five kills at a minus-.042 rate. Sophomore setters Courtney Bayles and Sydney Gabbard each had 13 assists, just two more together than DHS senior Addison Swift (24).

Durango senior Maddie Robertson's 15 reported kills was the battle's individual high count, as the Demons improved to 7-5 overall while remaining 1-2 in the SWL.

Defensively for Bayfield, Foutz, Mottin, McCoy and sophomore Jade Pascale were each in on three total blocks, while junior Emily Bauer came up with 12 of the team's 53 digs and Kudelski (three service aces) had nine.

Swept in IML play at Alamosa not 48 hours earlier, the Wolverines dipped to 5-8 overall and went into Tuesday's home match versus Pagosa Springs-Kudelski's first against her former team-an even 1-1 in league. Results against the Pirates (12-4, 2-1) were unavailable by the Times' new Tuesday afternoon deadline.

On tap this weekend, Bayfield heads to La Jara tomorrow to face Centauri. The Falcons (8-5, 0-2) played Tuesday at AHS (11-1, 3-0), still #7 in the CHSAANow.com Class 3A poll, then Thursday at 2A's #7 Ignacio.

Volleycats are red hot

Successful against two oft-problematic 2A/1A San Juan Basin League squads last Saturday, IHS improved to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in league after grinding out an 18-25, 26-24, 25-16, 24-26, 15-7 win over Dolores and a 25-27, 25-21, 19-25, 25-16, 16-14 win over Nucla at a triangular played at DHS.

Senior Miel Diaz had 12 kills in the first thriller, and classmate Ellie Seibel led with 14 in the second as Ignacio participated in their fifth five-gamer so far in 2015. Dolores dipped to 4-6, 2-4, and NHS-Class 1A's top 'Receiving Votes' team this week after being previously tied with arch-nemesis Norwood-to 10-3, 5-3.

The 'Cats host Ridgway tomorrow at 11 a.m. The 'Cats then welcome Dove Creek to IHS Gymnasium on Oct. 13, and Mancos on the 15th.
