Mail stolen from Bayfield Post Office

Someone broke into 14 boxes, 3 lockers

Someone broke into post office boxes and lockers at the Bayfield Post Office on Sept. 26 or Sept. 27, according to post office staff.

The thief broke into 14 post office boxes and three package lockers, said Postmaster Melinda Conners. A license plate was among the items reported stolen, she added.

A credit card was stolen and used for a car rental, according to the cardholder, who asked not to have her name used. The charges started on Sept. 26. She received an alert from her credit card company and cancelled the card. It was used in both Durango and Pagosa Springs, she added.

The Office of the Inspector General of the U.S. Postal Service is investigating the incident. All of the post office boxholders were notified and have received new keys.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Bayfield Marshals Office at 884-9636.
