Future of banners to be decided

School committee seeking public input
New banners hanging in the BHS gym commemorate all the school's sports actvities and their wins in conference, league and state competitions.

After criticism from some alumni, the Bayfield School District is revisiting its idea to auction off 103 banners that hung in the Bayfield High School gym.

Members of the Gym Refurbishing Committee are asking for public input on the future of the banners.

Dwindling wall space in the BHS gym has prevented new banners from being hung for seven years, Rob Dean, the BHS activities director, wrote in a press release from the school.

New banners, listing all of the school sports and activities and the years they won league, district and state championships, went up in the gym in August.

The committee met last spring to discuss renovating the main gym, "which included developing a respectful, fair, and consistent banner system that recognized all past, present, and future student accomplishments," Dean wrote.

The old banners were taken down and are currently being digitally archived by the BHS Yearbook class. When the digital archiving is completed, the future of the former banners will be decided by the Gym Banner Committee.

The committee met the week of October 19 and discussed several options for the banners that include hanging the state champion team banners back in the main gym, creating a photo display or actual banner display of the former banners, and hanging the former banners throughout the high school. Additional options include storing, auctioning, or donating the former banners.

The BHS Student Council has recommended putting up the school song in the gym, and the Gym Banner Committee is considering ways to recognize the BHS teams that have placed in state competitions from 2nd to 8th place.

The members of the committee, which is made up of BHS alumni, parents, staff and community members, would like to hear thoughts on the future of the former banners.

Committee members include Kristin Dallison, Ron Dunavant, Vivian Edwards, Dan Ford, Rod Grove, Tara Howard, Vernon Kimball, Kay Phelps, Nancy Phelps, Jennifer Zelinski and Rob Dean.

"Please contact them before the week of Nov. 9 when the next committee meeting will be held," Dean wrote.
