On to state!

IHS, BHS boys teams heading east

In a town with only one stoplight, the roundabout on County Road 501 serves as the place where proud parents and fans send BHS athletes and musicians to state competition.

On Wednesday, for the first time in 29 years, it was the Wolverines boys basketball team's turn for a state sendoff.

Escorted by Bayfield Marshal's Office cars, fire trucks, and even a local military rig, it was a large sendoff for a team that wasn't expected to make it to state. But the BHS boys clicked at the right time, won two regional games in Denver last weekend, and are heading to the Great 8 in 3A basketball.

Parents with cutout pictures of their boys' faces, fans waving signs, and lots of honking horns sent the boys on their way out of town at 8 a.m.

Tonight, they'll stay in Golden, then take on Colorado Academy at 10:15 a.m. Thursday at the Colorado School of Mines.

Ignacio boys, meanwhile, head east to play Rye at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at CSU Pueblo. The Bobcats are ranked third going into state, Rye is sixth. Ignacio cruised to another regional championship in Grand Junction on Saturday, handily defeating both of their opponents.

BHS fans are starting to leave town Wednesday or early Thursday to catch the March 12 game, while most Ignacio fans will hit the road Thursday.

KSUT Tribal Radio will broadcast the Ignacio games on 91.3, while Bayfield will be on 107.1 Passion radio.

Joel Priest will cover both teams for the Times to the extent that he can get from Golden to Pueblo and back again!

Games can also be viewed, for a fee, at www.chsaa.org.

Updates from all games will be posted on the Times' facebook page and www.pinerivertimes.com.
