Southern Ute Community Action Programs is hosting the annual Duck Race on July 28 as part of San Ignacio Festival.
Tickets are $10 each. First prize is $400, second is $200 and third prize is $100.
Tickets are on sale at Southwest Ag in Bayfield and the SUCAP Admin Office in Ignacio.
Only 500 tickets will be sold. The Duck Race is a fundraiser for the building fund for Southern Ute Head Start.
The Basin High School rodeo team will hold its annual pie auction, barbecue and street dance starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, in downtown Durango next to the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad station.
Proceeds go to the team to help with rodeo expenses throughout the year and is the only fundraiser of the year for the team, which is comprised of area high school students.
Josh the Otter will visit Pine River Library from 11 a.m. to noon on Friday, July 27.
Josh is the mascot of a nationally recognized drowning prevention and water safety program presented by SunUte Community Center.
Children will receive a Josh the Otter book, coloring book, swim passes to SunUte and a greater appreciation for water safety.
Parents, grandparents and caregivers can gain understanding of how their actions effect drowning prevention and water safety.

Sky Ute Casino Resort recently held a donation effort that collected groceries and supplies and matched funds from unredeemed slot vouchers for Durango Food Bank and La Plata County Humane Society.
The Food Bank and Humane Society received supplies donated by the community and more than $2,600 to help La Plata County families struggling with food insecurity and animals displaced during the 416 Fire.

Southern Ute Montessori School recently announced that applications for its Head Start and Early Head Start programs are now being accepted for the 2018-19 school year.
The Head Start program is for children 3 to 5 years old, and the Early Head Start program is for prenatal women and 6-week- to 3-year-old children. Families of children with special needs and low-income families are encouraged to apply.
Also, the service area for programs has expanded. It now includes boundaries of the Southern Ute Indian Reservation and Ignacio School District, and an area of Bayfield School District south of U.S. Highway 160, west to County Road 509 and east to County Roads 526 and 523.
Low-income families who live outside the service area will be considered.

In collaboration with Music in the Mountains, the Pine River Library will host a special all-ages outdoor concert by the Julius Quartet from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 25 in the library park.
Hailed as "the captivating young string quartet," the Julius Quartet is rapidly making itself known in the chamber music world.
Formed in the fall of 2012, the group held a special residency as Boston Conservatory's Honors String Quartet. Chairs and blankets are welcome.
La Plata Electric Association announced it contracted with National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Market Research Services to conduct telephone and online surveys to collect feedback about electricity practices from customers in La Plata and Archuleta counties.
Surveys will start July 30 and should take five minutes or less. More than 400 households will be randomly selected and surveyed through telephone calls or email requests.
Telephone calls will be placed from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday; no calls will be made on Sundays.

The Pine River Library is hosting an outdoor showing of the 2017 animated blockbuster Coco on Friday, July 27.
The film starts at sunset and will still be shown inside in case of inclement weather.
There will be free movie theater popcorn from Allen Theaters for all. Viewers can bring blankets or chairs for watching the movie.
The Southern Ute Museum and Cultural Center is honored to receive the Lummi Nation Totem Pole, which will be at the museum indefinitely.
A reception will be held at noon on Sunday, followed by a community potluck in the large classroom.
Scheduled speakers include Pearl Casias, Southern Ute Elder and Tribal Council Member, Jewell James, a House of Tears Carver and member of the Ute Mountain Ute Elders Committee, and Shaun Chapoose, a Ute Tribe Council Uncompahgre Band Representative.
This event is free and open to the public.

La Plata County Fair will be held Aug. 8-12, with the Derby at noon Aug. 11 at La Plata County Fairgrounds.

Local First will hold a "Let the Love Rain - Singles in Paradise" date auction from 7 to 11 p.m. Thursday at the Balcony Bar and Grill Backstage, 600 Main Ave.
Participants will describe their dream date, which must involve one Local First member business, and attendees will bid to determine who will join them. Those who receive bids of $30 or more will be given $30 for the date.
