BHS, IHS girls solid in Tuesday action

Telluride trumped, Mancos mauled

Leading 13-8 after one quarter and then 23-15 after two, the Bayfield Wolverines slammed shut a needed 47-24 road win Tuesday at 2A Telluride by owning the second half.

BHS booked 24 more points during the third and fourth quarters in the MinerDome while allowing only nine, and improved to 4-9 (still 0-4 in the 3A Intermountain) overall in preparation for this evening's test in La Jara at Centauri (12-2, 3-2), and tomorrow's at Alamosa.

Most recently, Centauri avenged a previous nine-point loss at Monte Vista by blasting the Pirates by 31, 50 to 19, at home last Friday. Alamosa, meanwhile, improved to 6-8 overall (still 3-2 in league) with a 28-point, non-league home win over 3A Buena Vista on Tuesday, and will try readying themselves for Bayfield's visit at Pagosa Springs (13-0, 4-0) today.

In the most recent CHSAANow.com Class 3A girls' rankings, released Monday, Feb. 1, the IML maintained a high statewide profile, with PSHS again holding down the top-ten's #1 spot, Centauri its #6 and MVHS appearing as an 'Others Receiving Votes' bubble team after dropping from #9 in the Jan. 25 poll.

No individual point totals or other statistics had been reported by either Wolverine head coach Lana Killough nor counterpart Jose Orellana of the Miners (1-10, 0-6 2A/1A San Juan Basin) by press time.

MANCOS 35, AT IGNACIO 63: Getting 16 points from senior Ellie Seibel and 14 from sophomore Hilda Garcia, Shane Seibel's Lady Bobcats had little difficulty improving to 6-0 in the SJBL and 10-3 overall with a 63-35 rout of Mallory Morgan's Mancos inside IHS Gymnasium.

Junior Alejandra Lujan also reached double figures for the #8-ranked [CHSAANow.com 2A poll, 2/1] victors with her ten, sophomore Avionne Gomez scored seven and seniors Cortney Wilson-Baker and Gibran Silva each had six, while MHS (5-7, 1-4) got 14 from junior Nicole Hess and eight from senior Jessica Gutierrez.

Lujan, Gomez and Seibel each had a reported six rebounds, while senior post Miriam Fernandez-Lopez had a team-high four assists and Gomez three as Ignacio shot an even 50 percent (27-of-54) from the field for the game.

Up next, IHS welcomes Ridgway this evening and then hosts Ouray tomorrow in continued league play.
