Display explores Pine River's role in valley

A historical photo of the dam at Vallecito.

During the months of February and March, the Pine River Valley Heritage Society Museum has a display at the Pine River Public Library depicting the history of the importance of the Pine River water for irrigation to the farms and ranches in our valley. Old newspapers from the Ignacio Chieftain dating July and September 1927 tell of the floods that wrecked havoc in Bayfield and Ignacio. Many photos can be seen on the construction of the Vallecito Dam that was completed in May 1941, increasing the irrigation availability that helped to settle our valley.

Grace Sossaman, Joanne McCoy and Anne Schrier, members of the heritage society, created the display.

The display will later be moved back to the museum for viewing during the summer operating season. The musuem will open on Saturday, June 4, with free ice cream from Lydia's Sweet Treats.
