BHS track girls 2nd at home meet

4x100 team wins relay

Unusually going without an individual champion, especially at their own Pine River Invitational inside Wolverine Country Stadium, Wednesday ended for the Bayfield girls with one "group" winner.

Freshman Shaylea Freier, sophomore Courtney Bayles, freshman Tymbree Florian and junior Maddi Foutz brought the baton from quadrant to quadrant and across the finish line faster than all at the rescheduled (from April 16) gathering in 52.82 seconds to prevail in the 4x100 relay, helping the Wolverines accumulate 115 points-trailing only 3A Intermountain Leaguers Pagosa Springs (128.5). With 113 points, 4A Durango came in third.

Reflective of the second-place team finish, BHS had multiple near-misses but otherwise solid showings.

Foutz ran second in the 200-meter dash, clocking 27.73, with fellow junior Amber Johnson (28.48) third. At double the distance, junior Bridget Goddard was second across the stripe in 1:05.25. Senior Katie Hawkins took second in the pole vault, her 8'8" bettered by the 9'2" of DHS' Jessica Lee, and Florian flew 15'7.75" in the long jump and came up short to only the 15'9.75" of 4A Montezuma-Cortez's Morgan Short.

She was also second in the 100, her time 13.74 seconds, while Johnson took second in the 300m hurdles-her 51.75 trailing DHS' Kathleen Duft by only 0.12 of a tick.

Foutz tied for third in the pole vault (8'2"), with junior Emily Bauer (7'2") fifth-as she also was in the long jump (14'9.25"), and as was freshman Mikayla Barnes in the shot put (30'3.5"), following sophomore teammate Tiarra Christensen's 30'8".

Freier ran a leg on Bayfield's 800m sprint medley relay, and with junior Isis Gonzales, Bayles and freshman Olivia Keitz, the unit ran a 2:05 flat and finished behind IML'ers Monte Vista (2:03.07) and 2A Dolores (1:59.98). Gonzales also placed fourth in the 400 in 1:06.46, and Bayles and Christensen were a scoring 7-8 (85'10" and 85'9", respectively) in the discus.
