Fully 'armed' throwers help take title

Westbrook pulls discus/shot sweep at home
In a strong sweep of the shotput and discus, the Bayfield boys went one-two-three Wednesday in their Pine River Invitational meet. Junior Sam Westbrook led the boys in both events. His winning shot throw was 47 feet, 10 inches.

If playing second fiddle to New Mexico's reigning Class 4A discus and shot put state champion, Bloomfield senior Gabriel Aguirre, just a few days before hinted anything to Bayfield's Sam Westbrook, it may have been that Westbrook could be on a special pace for not only the rest of his junior season but also next spring.

Letting fly a 136-footer Wednesday inside Wolverine Country Stadium, Westbrook not only bettered his 135'7" managed last Saturday at the Aztec Invitationalbut won the event at the rescheduled 2016 Pine River Invitational and helped the Wolverines to a first-place total of 135 points. Aguirre launched a massive 152'9" throw Saturday in Aztec.

4A Durango (113) was second and fellow 3A Intermountain Leaguers Pagosa Springs (89.5) took third.

Sophomore Ryan Phelps followed Westbrook with an improved 135'2" and came in third in the shot put with a 41'0.5". Westbrook, meanwhile, won the PRI with a 47'10" maximum-two inches from equaling Aguirre's state-winning 48-footer. Freshman teammate David Hawkins heaved the heavy sphere 41'3.5" to earn second.

In Aztec, Westbrook had actually sent the shot farther downrange, but his 48'4.5" best was only second-best, while Phelps finished fourth (41'7") and Hawkins eighth (39'6") by comparison.

Hurdles standout Carl Heide had very much an up-and-down day on his home track; disqualified for false starting in the 110-meter variety, he took first in the 300 meter hurdles at the PRI in 43.06.

In a long-standing Bayfield area of expertise, the pole vault, senior Cash Snooks took fourth by topping 9'8"-right behind sophomore teammate Chad Winkler's third-place 10'2"-and earned second in the high jump with a 5'7", with soph Dax Snooks placing fourth with his 5'1".

Wolverines Gus Roberts and Ethan Tate crossed 4-5 in the 400m dash, in 54.36 and 55.41 seconds respectively, then joined with Jesse Westbrook and Josh Westbrook to form an all-junior, second-place 4x200 relay which clocked 1:38.66-just 0.31 slower than CHS. BHS' 4x800 (senior Brandon Stuever, sophomore Sloan Mazur, junior Alex Knight, junior Cody Speece) also finished with second-place points after turning in an 8:47.42 effort.

Individually, Mazur also snagged a second, his 2:15.92 in the 800 trailing only DHS junior Coltin Gallegos (2:12.61), while Knight (2:16.54) was close behind in fourth-he'd taken second (in 5:14.06) in the 1,600-and junior Jackson Sibley (2:24.04) also was nearby in seventh.

Hawkins came in fourth in the 100, his time 12.10 seconds, but was not on the Wolverines' 4x100 (freshman Briant Cuellar, senior Samuel Kundrik, Josh Westbrook, sophomore Jaden Vitagliano) which placed fourth in 48.07. Cash Snooks dashed to fifth in the 200, clocking 25.40.

Up next for the Bayfield boys will be this weekend's High Altitude Championships hosted by Alamosa.
