Re-routed BHS track boys take 6th in Grand Junction

Phelps leads field in discus

Faced with a longer, more mountainous drive north to 5A Grand Junction Central's Warrior Invitational rather than east to 3A Alamosa's weather-canceled meet, Bayfield's boys' track-and-field team fared quite well last Saturday at the Grand Valley's lower elevation.

Leading the way was sophomore Ryan Phelps' 135-foot, 10-inch discus throw, which landed a full eight inches farther downrange inside Stocker Stadium than the best of GJC senior Cheyenne Little-Fawn in the battle for second and third place. 5A Arvada Pomona's Clae Walters unleashed a victorious 153'1" maximum.

Walters also prevailed in the shot put with a 54'2.75" best, leaving Little-Fawn (48'11.5") in second, BHS junior Sam Westbrook fifth (44'10.75") and Phelps 11th (39'8.5").

Westbrook also took fifth in the discus (127'7") as the Wolverine duo earned 12 team points and totaled 16 between the specialties. That was almost half of Bayfield's final haul of 35, good enough for a share of sixth with meet-hosting Central. 4A Palisade topped the standings with 112.

Hurdler Carl Heide scored fourth-place points in both the 110-meter and 300m varieties, with his 16.13 in the former trailing Palisade's national-caliber senior Jay Shuman's winning 15.20, and his 42.59 in the latter ultimately bested by Western State Colorado University-bound FMHS senior Jacob Hahn's winning 39.00.

BHS' 4x200 relay of David Hawkins, Gus Roberts, Ethan Tate and Josh Westbrook took fifth in 1:36.67. The 4x400 (Heide, Roberts, Cody Speece, Tate) placed seventh in 3:37.99. The 4x800 (Alex Knight, Sloan Mazur, Speece, Brandon Stuever) came in sixth with a time of 8:41.39.

Individually on the track, Roberts finished 12th in the 400 (54.12) with Tate 16th (54.62). Knight was 17th (2:16.94) in the 800. In the field, Dax Snooks bounded 35 feet, three inches in the triple jump to take 12th and Heide tied for 14th in the high jump with a 5'4" best. Snooks also booked two more top-20's with his 15th-place 18.87 in the 110m hurdles, and his 19th-place 48.91 in the 300. Hawkins finished 20th (12.24) in the 100m dash.

This weekend Bayfield heads to the Terry Alley Invitational in Pagosa Springs.
