Aspen Club women gather to aid new moms in need

Sherry Gurholt, left, Terrie Miller and Karen Baxter of the Florida Aspen Club pack hundreds of baby items into five tubs that will be donated to parents in need.

Members of the Florida Aspen Club met Tuesday at the home of Marilyn Ellis to pack goodies for newborn babies into plastic infant wash tubs. They will take the tubs to Mercy Medical Center, where nurses will give them to new mothers most in need of the assistance.

The tubs included baby blankets made by Ellis and Karen Baxter, and little outfits knitted by Sherry Gurholt. There are five tubs - two for boys, two for girls, and one for a preemie of either sex. As is tradition, the work session started with a potluck and socializing.

The Florida Aspen Club is a local women's community service group. The baby baskets or tubs have been a twice-a-year project. Club members say they are the only ones doing this, and they are known for the baskets. For many years they've also packed Christmas food and gift boxes for several local needy families, but other local entities seem to be filling this need now, so the club will do three baby basket sessions next year instead of the Christmas boxes.

The club was started in the 1950s. Current members are dedicated to continuing the service tradition of their predecessors. New members are always welcome. For information call Loraine at 884-2803.
