Autumn arrives, sheep heading south

Bayfield Heritage Days and Sheep Trailing set for Saturday

Bayfield Heritage Days and Sheep Trailing, the area's celebration of autumn and our rural heritage, is set for Saturday.

Events begin at 7:30 a.m. with registration for the 5K fun run and walk at Joe Stephenson Park in downtown Bayfield. Race day registration is $20 and includes a T-shirt.

The run and walk begins at 8 a.m.

The sheep will come down the Buck Highway about 9 a.m., and the parade will take place afterward on Mill Street, usually at about 10 a.m.

The sheep sometimes have their own schedules, so these times are approximate. Folks watching the sheep trailing are asked to please keep their dogs away from the Buck Highway. Observers also are asked to stay out of the street.

"Let's leave the sheep herding and wrangling to the professionals!" organizers said on the event website.

After the parade, there are events in Joe Stephenson Park, including a disc dog demonstration and instruction until noon.

There will be a car show, a contest to decorate tractors and farm equipment, balloon art, face painting and children's games sponsored by Pine River Public Library.

The Los Pinos Fiber Alliance will have demonstrations of wool spinning and other fiber-related activities.

More than 40 vendors and groups will be selling hand-crafted goods or providing information about local events in the park, as well.

Music is by Bayfield's favorite band, Wild Country, with a beer garden run by the Be FRANK Foundation.
