Runners hurry to finish in Grand Junction

Three BHS boys break 18 minutes in the Anna Banana

Sometimes one just has to go with the flow, no matter how fast it is.

Especially if one doesn't want to get left behind.

With 4A Montrose's Ian Meek shattering the meet record and winning with a scorching time of 15 minutes, 31.6 seconds-outclassing runner-up/teammate Evan Graff's 15:39.7 and the 15:55.7 of 4A Durango's Harry Steinberg-there was no other choice for any of the runners, Bayfield's included, competing at last Saturday's Anna Banana Memorial Wildcat Invitational at Connected Lakes State Park.

But the Wolverine boys did the best they could up in the Grand Valley to stay with the fast pace, and placed 10th-totaling 308 points-out of 18 scoring teams. First across the finish line, junior Sloan Mazur took 41st in a swift 17:33.1, with both senior Cody Speece and freshman Elco Garcia, Jr., hot on his heels in 43rd (17:34.4) and 44th (17:34.6), respectively.

Senior Bryan Gram was 118th in 19:40.4, seniors Jackson Sibley and Gus Roberts were not far away as they crossed 122nd (19:46.6) and 123rd (19:48.4), and freshman Rylan Ross placed 147th (21:54.1) as 168 individuals overall finished the event.

The team title went to Montrose, whose 80 accumulated points were 18 fewer than 4A Edwards Battle Mountain. DHS earned third with 101, and 5A Grand Junction Central (120) and 4A Palisade (144) rounded out the top five. Event-hosting 5A Fruita Monument took eighth with 197.

For the BHS girls, freshman Claire Hufnagel came in 55th out of 136 and clocked 22:08.9. Senior Bridget Goddard took 65th in 22:46.9 and classmate Amber Johnson was 73rd in 23:11.2. Senior Rachel Cooper finished 75th (23:20.6), senior Isis Gonzales 79th (23:34.3), senior Skyla Ruybal 108th (26:02.3), sophomore Mylee Sanders 128th (29:23.4) and sophomore Sarah Ruybal 134th (30:19.7).

The girls totaled 290 points and ended up 13th in the standings.

Durango's 46 earned second and 4A Glenwood Springs' 139 third, while Palisade came in fourth with 170 and 2A Telluride-led by junior Soleil Gaylord, the individual champ in 18:51.9-rounded out the top five with 187. FMHS, meanwhile, totaled 274 points and placed 11th out of 16 scoring squads.

This weekend, Bayfield will run at tomorrow's Salida Invitational.
