Bayfield boys and girls finish 7th at regionals
Cody Speece was the lone Bayfield High School cross country runner to qualify for Saturday's state championship meet in Colorado Springs. He finished 12th at the regional race.

The Bayfield High School cross country teams finished seventh at Friday's Colorado 3A Region 1 Cross Country meet in Delta, and will send one runner to the Colorado High School Activities Association's Class 3A State Meet.

Cody Speece's 12th-place finish in 16 minutes, 55 seconds led the Wolverines and stamped his ticket to state.

"Cody ran really well," Bayfield head coach Josh Walton said. "It was 40 seconds faster than his fastest time this year. The boys did very well and we're excited to see Cody run at state."

Freshman Elco Garcia Jr. finished 23rd with a time of 17:30, and Sloan Mazur's 17:51 time was 26th. Jackson Sibley (18:55) finished in 49th, Nathan Carlson (19:52) was 81st, Rylan Ross was 100th, Gus Roberts was 102nd and Bryan Gram finished 103rd for BHS.

The Bayfield girls also took seventh place in the 3A Region 1 meet.

Bridget Goddard's personal best time of 21:40 led the way for the Wolverines and was good for 27th overall. Amber Johnson's 22:37 time earned her 41st place, while Claire Hufnagel (22:44) and Isis Gonzales (22:46) were right behind in 43rd and 44th. Rachel Cooper overcame a fall to finish 55th in 23:09, Skyla Ruybal (26:29) was 91st, Sarah Ruybal (27:13) was 96th, Mylee Sanders (30:01) was 101st, and Jade Sanders (30:20) was 102nd.

"The girls ran all out great races," Walton said. "Most of the times were the best they'd been all year, so I'm really happy with the way they ran."
