BHS grapplers 7th at Pagosa

Michaeli, Westbrook stand atop podium

Having given Bayfield the lead for good in last Thursday's Intermountain League-opening dual at home versus Montezuma-Cortez, senior 170-pounder Macoy Michaeli completed an outstanding three days of wrestling by scoring a championship at Pagosa Springs' Rocky Mountain Invitational last Saturday.

Helping the Wolverines pile up 122 team points, good for seventh place, Michaeli pinned Weston Huffaker from Centauri in only 55 seconds to secure top billing. The Falcons, however, placed first overall, 181.5 to 168.5 over 5A Aztec, which notched a 53-20 dual win inside BHS Gymnasium the previous night. That dual was barely 24 hours after the Wolverines had beaten the Panthers 33-21.

Senior heavyweight Sam Westbrook, as expected, starred at the RMI with four pins and the last of those coming at the expense of out-of-stater Parker Knudsen of 1A Monticello, Uah. 126-pounder Garrett Beebe placed second after losing 9-1 in the final to AHS' Cody Candelaria (who'd narrowly won their dual match 4-3).

Jake Sandrey also took second, losing at 132 to 5A Bloomfield's Levi Whitley.

At 182 pounds, Daniel Westbrook saved fifth-place points for Bayfield, and 106-pounder Colby Baker finished sixth.

And in the always-tough 120-pound class, Wolverine senior Cody Speece salvaged seventh place with a 14-7 rout of 2A Del Norte's Cobie Black.

Up next, BHS will travel north to Rangely for the Panthers' Vern Rose Memorial tomorrow. On Thursday, BHS hosted a league dual at home against Centauri.
