Wolverines pressure Monte Vista away

BHS girls finish well, but fall by 11 against Pirates

Having trailed Monte Vista by just a 29-21 margin at halftime, the Bayfield girls dipped to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the 3A Intermountain after the Pirates gained enough separation during the third quarter to outlast BHS' closing 15-8 fourth-quarter rush Saturday afternoon and prevail 53-42 out in Rio Grande County.

Showing improvement from the previous evening's 61-20 home loss to IML power Centauri (still #5 in the CHSAANow.com Class 3A poll), the Wolverines got two three-pointers and 10 points from senior guard Chloe Weybright, nine points from junior center/forward Courtney Bayles and eight from sophomore guard Jordan Lanning, but it wasn't enough on the road, even with MVHS shooting an awful 2-of-22 from three-point land and just 17-67 overall.

Seven-of-eight from the free-throw line, senior forward Danielle Chacon still went off for a game-best 20 points, and Monte - which was 17-of-24 at the charity stripe, while Bayfield was 10-13 - also got 15 from senior guard Brianna Villagomez and 10 from junior guard Mariah Barbosa.

Though able to make 11 steals defensively, 32 turnovers (compared to the Pirates' 12) didn't help the Wolverines' cause in enemy territory. Otherwise, in most respects the visitors were the hosts' equal.

Bayles grabbed eight of BHS' 26 rebounds, while Chacon clutched seven of MVHS' 28. Barbosa made a bid for a triple-double with six boards and as many assists, while BHS junior forward Savannah Kaufmann scored six points and collected six caroms.

Up next, Bayfield will continue league play at home Friday versus sixth-ranked Pagosa Springs, then make the long drive back to the San Luis Valley to meet Alamosa Saturday afternoon.

Off to a 2-0 start in league, PSHS improved to 8-1 overall Tuesday evening, winning 38-29 at 2A Sanford (5-5). MVHS, meanwhile, continued their climb to 6-4, 1-1 after defeating non-league 3A Buena Vista (2-5) Tuesday evening.
