Bayfield boys make it look easy at Monte

Wolverines' 33-point win follows 37-point win
Bayfield's Brian Mashak blankets Centauri's Nate Anderson (42) defensively during last Friday's 78-41 conquest inside BHS Gymnasium. Mashak scored 10 points in the romp, then reached double figures again in the next day's lopsided win at Monte Vista, also making six steals.

Sprinting out to a 24-12 lead on the road after just eight regulation minutes - a start freakishly similar to the previous night's 25-10 outburst inside BHS Gymnasium versus Centauri - Bayfield's boys basketball team had little difficulty in backing up last Friday's 78-41 victory with a 73-40 win at Monte Vista.

Hitting 10 of his 14 shots from the field, junior center/forward Ryan Phelps led all players with 21 points as the Wolverines improved to 6-5 overall, 2-0 in the 3A Intermountain. Senior guard Brian Mashak contributed 11 points and sophomore guard/forward Hayden Farmer also reached double figures with 10 points.

Junior guard Dax Snooks and sophomore guard Keyon Prior each netted nine as BHS was a solid 56 percent (32-of-57) from the floor and and also 5-of-9 at the freethrow line.

Phelps and Snooks each snared six rebounds, while Mashak had four assists and nabbed six steals.

Bayfield led by 20 points, 42-22, at halftime, then increased their advantage to 57-34 after three quarters as the overwhelmed Pirates slipped to 4-6, 0-2.

Up next, the Wolverines welcome Pagosa Springs Friday night, then travel to face Alamosa Saturday evening as league action continues. Most recently, PSHS improved to 5-5 overall (still 1-1 in the IML) with a tight 49-45 road win Tuesday night at 2A Sanford (6-4).
