Bayfield School District will host a School Safety Night from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, Monday, Jan. 30, at the Performing Arts Center at Bayfield High School.

The keynote speaker is Susan Payne, founder and director of Safe2Tell, a statewide anonymous hotline for youths to call when they have a safety concern or issue.

"Safe2Tell works really great," said Jeff Whitmore, the director of safety and transportation for the Bayfield School District. "It's the biggest prevention tool we have." There have been calls from Bayfield youth to Safe2Tell.

"It's nothing super serious, but all over the state, there have been bunches of things."

In addition to Payne's speech, breakout sessions will be lead by the Bayfield Marshal's Office, Upper Pine River Fire Protection District and U.S. Department of Homeland Security. There also will be information on bullying, as well as Internet safety and security. An agent from Homeland Security will address sexting and other issues involving teens, Whitmore said. The Marshal's Office will discuss lockdowns and how they work in the district.

Pizza, salad and drinks will be served starting at 6 p.m. in the BHS cafeteria.

There will be age-appropriate activities for all ages, including childcare.

All Bayfield families and community members are invited to attend. The district is asking for RSVPs to 884-2496 to get a headcount for the pizza.

Whitmore said several districts in the area are holding similar events.

"We're just trying to get the word out to our parents and community about safety," he said. "We all want to be on the same page, and we want to know the expectations in the district."
