Bobcats fall just short against 4A Durango

At times forced into a game of 7- or 8-on-5 last Saturday during a 35-26 San Juan Basin League loss at Norwood, Ignacio's girls were certainly relieved to play their next game in more familiar settings.

Even if it meant facing 4A Durango inside Fort Lewis College's Whalen Gymnasium on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, the Bobcats ended up on the same side of a similar outcome.

Having held Maverick senior center Macie Magallon to just 11 points on Saturday, IHS managed to limit not only primary Demon threat Katrina Chandler, but also former Bobcat teammate Hilda Garcia to a combined 23 of DHS' 36 points in a six-point loss.

Trailing 15-11 after the first two non-league quarters, Ignacio (9-5 overall) rallied back in the third and fourth behind an inspired effort by junior guard Avionne Gomez, regularly defended by Chandler. Having fought physical resistance for each of her team-high 10 points inside NHS Gymnasium, Gomez managed a team-high 11 against the Demons, all coming in the second half. Durango's Chandler paced all with her 13 points.

Freshman center/forward Morgan Herrera scored eight points (she netted as many at Norwood) in her first regular-season appearance inside the venue once showcasing brother and Bobcat basketball great Alex Herrera.

Garcia, a junior, finished with 10 points for Durango (12-7).

Senior Alejandra Lujan and freshman Larissa Gallegos each scored four for IHS, which went 6-of-8 at the stripe, including Gomez's fourth-quarter 3-of-3 work.

Up next, Ignacio resumes SJBL work Friday at home versus Telluride (4-11), with tipoff inside IHS Gymnasium slated for 5:30 p.m. After hosting Ridgway tomorrow (3:30 p.m.) inside SunUte Community Center, the 'Cats then visit Pagosa Springs on Valentine's Day for a 7 p.m. engagement with one of Class 3A's best.
