Spelling students match wits

It's time for spelling bees.

Ignacio and Bayfield middle schools recently held their school bees, with winners advancing to the state meet in Denver on March 11.

Amanda Henderson of Ignacio Middle School and Kaden Valencia of Bayfield Middle School won their school district competitions to advance to state.

In the Ignacio bee, Jackie Carrillo took second place and Abbi Barthel took third. Jeffrey Brittain won first place in the vocabulary round. Henderson and Carrillo went into three final rounds to get a winner, reported Jennifer Boniface of IMS. Henderson finally won with the word pallor.

In addition to the qualifying meet, middle school students in Ignacio and Bayfield competed in a second friendly spelling competition between the two schools on Feb. 9. The winners were Matthew Belleau of Ignacio, who took first place. Alex Sears of Bayfield who took second place, and Trinity Strohl of Ignacio who took third place. Belleau's winning word was a posteriori.
