Wolverines ousted in district play-in game

Improving BHS girls stopped at Monte Vista

Not giving themselves quite the chances to win as Monte Vista did Tuesday evening, the Bayfield girls' basketball season ended with a 61-46 road loss in the Intermountain League District Tournament play-in game.

Senior guard Chloe Weybright finished her short but appreciated Wolverine career with two three-pointers - both part of a 22-point third quarter. BHS (6-14, 2-8 IML) tried climbing out of a 37-14 halftime hole. Junior center Courtney Bayles also logged 10, but was 0-of-6 from the foul line.

Sophomore Jordan Lanning managed eight points, senior Taylor Morris and junior Savannah Kaufmann each had six, senior Kyle Baker four and junior Tiarra Christensen two for the loop's fifth-place crew.

Helping fourth-place MVHS (12-8, 5-5) race out to a 22-8 lead after eight minutes, senior guard Brianna Villagomez totaled three treys and 16 points. Surprisingly scoreless during the first quarter, junior guard Mariah Barbosa ignited during the second and finished with a devastating five triples and game-high 18 points.

Senior forward Danielle Chacon netted two more threes (as a team, the Pirates nailed 12) and booked 11 as MVHS advances to face regular-season champs Centauri (18-1, 10-0) Thursday inside BHS Gymnasium.

Bayfield's boys (13-6, 9-1 IML), meanwhile, will meet Centauri Friday tonight in tourney semifinal action targeted for a 6:30 p.m. start. Only 2-8 during regular-season league work, the Falcons improved to 9-11 by upsetting Montezuma-Cortez (7-13, 4-6) in Tuesday's play-in phase, 66-54.
