Fleet feet: Mashak, Heide head BHS boys in Bloomfield

Snooks wins high jump, throwers dominate again

Earning the unofficial "fastest man" honor in the 2017 Bloomfield Quad's short sprints, Bayfield senior Brian Mashak won the 100-meter dash in 11.31 seconds and the 200 in 23.03.

If there was such a thing, "fastest man over obstacles" would have gone to junior teammate Carl Heide, whose wins in the 110m hurdles (15.80) and 300m hurdles (41.01) gave the Wolverine boys a complete sweep of the shortest individual running events upon Curtis Clement Memorial Track.

Put them together and, well...

Spectators saw the latter half of the first-place 4x400 relay, as the duo teamed with Cody Speece and Gus Roberts to hustle the baton around in 3:42.51 - more than six seconds faster than second place 4A Pojoaque Valley - to earn BHS another 10 of its second-place 117.5 team points.

Finishing behind only 5A Kirtland Central's 119.5, Bayfield would leave town with several more strong performances, including Dax Snooks' effort in the high jump. Able to clear the bar set five feet, eight inches high, neither he nor 5A Bloomfield's Andrew Kluth-Clark managed to go higher in fewer tries than the other and both shared first place, flipping a coin to take home the blue ribbon. Unfortunately, Snooks lost the ribbon contest.

Also clearing 5'8", Dawson Heide ended splitting fourth with 4A Shiprock's Adrian Gibson.

Repeating their opening-week dominance in the throws, senior Sam Westbrook and junior Ryan Phelps went 1-2 in both the discus (Westbrook 141'5", Phelps 136'1") and shot (Westbrook 47'6", Phelps 46'7") to score big for the Wolverines. Chad Winkler and Colton Fine did similarly in the pole vault, with the former taking second (11'0") and the latter fourth (10'0").

In the 400 meters, Roberts (54.74), Sloan Mazur (54.99), Alex Knight (56.70) and Speece (56.88) finished third, fourth, sixth and eighth, respectively, with the first three totaling eight team points. Snooks scored BHS another four with his third-place showing (17.73) in the 110m hurdles, and headed up a 3-4-5 team performance, garnering nine team points, in the triple jump with his 37'11.5" best.

Jesse Westbrook followed at 35'10" and Fine flew 34'3.5"

The 4x100 relay (47.12) and sprint medley relay (4:15.61) each finished fourth, as did Dylan Hilliker in the 100 meters (11.86). Rounding out Bayfield's top-five results were Mazur's fifth in the 800 (2:09.18), Wyatt Killinen's fifth in the shot (42'0") and Jaden Vitagliano's fifth in the long jump (18'1").

Up next for the Wolverines will be a trip to Grand Junction for the Mickey Dunn Invitational on April 1.
