Ready for a big day?
Heritage Day, Ignacio Centennial to be celebrated Sept. 28
By Carole McWilliams
Times senior staff writer
Next Saturday, Sept. 28, will be a big day in the Pine River Valley.
Residents can start off the day at Bayfield Heritage Day and Sheep Trailing, then go to Ignacio to help celebrate their centennial from 4 to 8 p.m., then come back to Bayfield for free fireworks – the ones that didn’t happen on July 4.
Heritage Day will start at 8 a.m. with a 5k family fun run/ walk organized by Boy Scout Troop 506. The run starts at Joe Stephenson Park on Mill Street.
The Brown family’s sheep, around 2,000 of them, will come through on the Buck Highway (CR 521) shortly after 9 a.m. Spectators will need to be in place before 9 a.m. and stand only on the west side of the street. The sheep jam up if there are spectators on both sides of the road. Please leave your dogs at home!!
The parade on Mill Street will start after the sheep have passed through. Parade sign-ups are free and can be downloaded from the Heritage Day web site – www.bayfieldheritagedays.org. The Bayfield Lions Club is in charge of the parade this year.
Then activities will move to Joe Stephenson Park with live music on the gypsy stage, food, Rotary beer garden, arts and crafts vendors, pie eating contest, kids games, sheep camp display with antique sheep herder wagon, draft horse play day in the rodeo arena, classic car display, antique identifications and appraisals, children’s art show, and lots more.
At dusk, the Town of Bayfield and Upper Pine Fire District will shoot off fireworks from the south end of Joe Stephenson Park. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and snacks.
Saturday, September 28, 2013 - Town of Ignacio Centennial Celebration
Ignacio Centennial activities start at 4 p.m. in Shoshone Park with a rocket launch, then a 5K run through town.
Other activities are historical storytelling and memorabilia, children’s booth and pig chase, farmers market vendors, pie toss, music and dancers.
The highlight will be a free community dinner.
Also for the centennial, the town will do a tree planting, time capsule, and an entry sign dedication.
