Thursday, May 15, 2008 - Children Youth and Family Master Plan to be presented The La Plata County Children, Youth and Family Master Plan will be presented from 6 to 8 p.m. May 15 at the Smiley Building Auditorium in Durango.
The community is invited to enjoy an evening of food, music, and recognition. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the recommendations that over 2,000 residents believe are critical for ensuring all of our children, youth and families thrive.
Some transportation will be available from Bayfield, Ignacio and the La Plata County Fairgrounds.

Friday, May 16, 2008 - Humane Society holding adopt-a-thon The La Plata County Humane Society will host its sixth annual Adopt-A-Thon, Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Shelter located at 1111 South Camino del Rio (just North of Wal-mart ). With litter season in full swing, the goal of this event is to find permanent homes for all of the animals living at the shelter.
Allison Ragsdale Photography will be there holding a special fundraising event taking professional pet portraits Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For only $20 (normally, a $105 value), you can purchase a 5x7 portrait of your pet with all proceeds benefiting the Humane Society. Space is limited so call the shelter to sign up!
Additionally, a variety of live music performances will be provided by Dave Mensch of Formula 151, The Silver Mountain String Band, and Gigi Love & Howie Basley.
A concession will also be serving food and drink and the Humane Society Thrift Store will be holding special sales during this event.
So come by and check out all of the animals available for adoption, enjoy the music and food and help support ALL of the great animals who are in need of loving homes!! All proceeds benefit the Humane Society. For more information, please call the Shelter at 259-2847.

Saturday, May 24, 2008 - Lewis Mercantile sponsors first annual Pig-Out Lewis True Value Mercantile is proudly presenting the first annual Pine Valley Pig-Out. It will be a grilling contest and decking demo on Saturday May 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the “Wounded Warriors” of the Blue Star Moms.
Six local teams will compete for prizes and bragging rights in a variety of categories including originality, personality and presentation. The first 100 people to donate $10 for adults and $5 for children to the Wounded Warriors will sample the cuisine and cast their ballots.
To complement the grilling, Universal Forest Products and Lumber Products will be there to demonstrate the latest and greatest in decking materials. This is a great opportunity to take advantage of special pricing on your summer deck project.
