Pink Digs comes to BMS on Thursday
9/18/2012 By: Times staff report

Left, Ignacio High School fans support their Volleycats during the 2011 Pink Digs for a Cure. This year's Pink Digs games start Sept. 18 and run through October.

Volleyball players in pink are coming back!
Instead of the usual red for the Ignacio Bobcats, purple for Bayfield Wolverines, and blue and yellow for the Fort Lewis Skyhawks, local volleyball teams will wear pink jerseys for the sixth annual Pink Digs for a Cure games in September and October.

BMS will host its Pink Digs game today at 4 p.m. Local cancer survivors being honored as the All-Star Team are Linda Hester, who is fighting leukemia, Joanne Hockenbury, who is living with breast cancer, and Sandra Herrera, a breast cancer survivor.

Pink Digs is a project of the Four Corners Volleyball Club (FCVBC), the Women's Health Coalition of southwest Colorado, and BP America.

Several southwest Colorado volleyball programs are digging to earn $30,000, toward emergency fund scholarships for local, in-treatment breast cancer patients.
Since its inception in 2007, participating Pink Digs student-athletes and community businesses have partnered to raise more than$100,000, for the WHC Emergency Fund. Throughout October, 2012, four volleyball programs will strive to raise $30,000, in contributions:
• Thursday, September 20th Bayfield Middle School Wolverines 4pm
• Tuesday, September 25th Miller Middle School Angels 4pm
• Tuesday, October 2nd Ignacio High School Bobcats 4pm
• Tuesday, October 9th Durango High School Demons 430pm
• Saturday, October 27th Fort Lewis College Skyhawks 7pm

Pink Digs for a Cure is committed to three objectives: Teaching our student-athletes the greater values of community contribution through the sport of volleyball, advancing the WHC Emergency Scholarship Fund for qualifying cancer patients, and partnering with our community businesses, schools, citizens, and families, to assist local cancer patients undergoing treatment. Pink Digs Platinum Partner, BP America, continues to set the precedent, partnering with the student-athletes of Pink Digs for a Cure.

"Our community support is amazing!" said Terene Foutz, the director of the volleyball club and organizer of the event. "We’re combining forces, gaining strength each year. Our student-athletes are sending a strong message to local cancer patients that we care, we support you, and we hope to make a positive, lasting impact."

Everyone is welcome to come cheer on the teams, as well as supporting local breast cancer patients and survivors.

Local breast cancer survivors will be honored at center court, as part of our Team Roster All-Stars. Pink Gift Shop for apparel, gifts, gear will be available for purchase at Pink Digs.

Fans, businesses, organizations may view all PINK DIGS EVENT DAY information at www.fourcornersvolleyball.org. Or contact Foutz at 769-0219, CoachT@fourcornersvolleyball.org. Business sponsorships also are available.
