The Bayfield Wolverines defeated Faith Christian of Arvada in a cold and muddy 18-13 game on Saturday.
Quarterback Matt Knickerbocker had to leave the game in the first half, but Allec Rodriguez switched from receiving to quarterbacking duties and handled the position well.
Faith Christian led early in the half with a touchdown but missed the extra point putting the score 6-0. BHS answered back when Knickerbocker brought in a touchdown, bringing the score 6-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Bayfield intercepted the ball from Faith early in the second half and Colter McMenimen ran the ball 20 yards. Drake Rhodes ran the ball in 15 yards for the touchdown, bringing the score to 12-6 for Bayfield.
On their next possession, Allec Rodriguez launched a 30-yard pass to McMenimen, putting Bayfield on the 25-yard line where they took a timeout. TJ Pazell came back from the timeout and ran the ball to the 16, where Rodriguez passed to McMenimen for another Bayfield touchdown bringing the score 18-6 as they headed into the locker room at the half.
The second half was a defensive slugfest as the Wolverines held Faith Christian to just one more touchdown, and that was the end of the scoring for the game.
McMenimen, Joe Zink, T.J Pazell and Nate Goddard piled up the tackes on the Eagles. The Wolverines fumbled the ball in the third, giving possession to the Eagles. The Wolverines got the ball back a short while later, but were hampered by two clipping penalties in the third quarter. Then the Eagles' T.J. Hass ran the ball in 25 yards and got their final touchdown of the game.
Drake Rhodes got a big carry for the Wolverines in the 4th, but both teams were wearing down in the 30-degree temperatures, with wind chills in the 20s. Neither team made many yards after that, and Bayfield took a knee in the final 30 seconds of the game as the clock finished.
The Wolverines play Platte Valley on Saturday, the location to be announced. Platte Valley defeated second-ranked Eaton 25-18 in an upset on Saturday.
Defeating Faith Christian was sweet for Bayfield's seniors, who lost to the Eagles 34-0 in 2009 during their last meeting. State finals are scheduled for Nov. 24 in Denver.
On another note: The BHS girls volleyball fell against Gunnison in five games on Saturday. Gunnison will go on to the final four and our Lady Wolverines are coming home. Great job girls, we are proud of you!
