Sheriff's investigators report scam in Redwine investigation
12/11/2012 By: Times staff report

A subject has been attempting to perpetrate a scam via Facebook in the disappearance of 13-year old Dylan Redwine, La Plata County deputies said in a news release Monday evening.
He identifies himself as Abass Gadafi, a new resident of the Bayfield area. He claims to be the "boss of a kidnapper gang" and claims to be holding Dylan Redwine captive and wants $1,000 to provide a photo of Dylan and then he expects another $4,000 in order to release Dylan. The money is to be sent to an address in the UK via Western Union. “This is a scam,” cautions Captain Jim Ezzell with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office and member of the Task Force. “Do not send any money. Anyone who has been contacted by this individual is asked to please notify the Sheriff's Office at (970) 385-2900.”

Dozens of the Dylan Redwine Task Force investigators continue to follow up on aspects of the on-going investigation in Dylan’s disappearance. The volume of tips received on the tip-line is keeping several investigators, both locally and out of the area busy. Tips have come in from across the US and are continuing to come in. The tips include information relative to theories, items, locations and persons.

The items recovered during the community search on December 8 are being evaluated for their value to this investigation

Citizens who have information that may aid in the search for Dylan are asked to leave a voicemail message on the Dylan Redwine Tip Line at 970-382-7511. If a citizen wants a return call from law enforcement, they must leave their contact information, but anonymous tips are also acceptable. This tip line is not a manned telephone number and it is not a way to get information about the search.

The Task Force is still requesting any recreational video footage or photographs that include vehicles traveling on any routes between Durango and Vallecito Lake, taken between 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 18 through noon on Monday November 19. Citizens who have video footage or photographs that may be helpful to the investigation are asked to call dispatch at (970) 385-2900 to make an arrangement to get a copy of the footage or photographs to the Task Force.

Crime Stoppers will issue a $5,000 reward, provided by an anonymous donor, for information leading to the recovery of Dylan Redwine. Crime Stoppers can be reached at 970-247-1112.

Citizens may also call the hotline for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-THE LOST
(1-800-843-5678).
