Bayfield teacher injured in head-on crash

New Year's Day looked like a scenic Colorado postcard. Chilly temps continue this weekend with lows in the negative.

Bayfield resident Paula Carron was seriously injured in a Dec. 29 head-on car crash on Highway 160 east of Elmore’s Corner that killed the front-seat passenger in the other vehicle and seriously injured that driver.
According to the Colorado State Patrol crash report, Carron was eastbound in a 2010 Toyota 4Runner when the westbound 2000 Dodge Durango driven by 71-year-old Jeremy Coleman of Durango drifted into the oncoming lane. The state patrol report lists Trooper Chad Martin’s opinion that Coleman had fallen asleep at the wheel.
The front passenger side of Coleman’s SUV hit the front driver’s side of Carron’s SUV. The crash happened at 2:20 p.m. on dry pavement. Coleman’s passenger, 70-year-old Judith Coleman of Durango, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Carron and both Colemans were using seatbelts. Airbags deployed in both vehicles. Both vehicles were listed as going at or just below the 60 mph speed limit. Charges are pending against Jeremy Coleman.
Carron is a longtime teacher in Bayfield.
